Cobden Bridge
Avon Construction were awarded the contract for the design and build of a retaining wall on the River Itchen in Southampton for McCarthy & Stone.
The wall, made from gabion baskets was approximately 40m long and 4m high and sat on a 2m wide pile cap supported by 24 no 450 reinforced concrete piles.
Avon Construction designed and built the retaining wall from inset. Gabion baskets were chosen for the wall construction as it had a lower environmental impact in terms of noise and vibration during construction.
The piles and pile cap were built on the intertidal foreshore and needed careful planning and coordination to successfully install them around the available tidal windows.
