Jubilee Footbridge
Avon Construction were awarded the contract to design and build a 28m span footbridge over the River Cherwell at Oxford for Christ Church College.
The bridge is located in Christ Church Meadow, a grade I listed landscape in the Heritage Register of Historic Park and Gardens of special historic interest in England.
Acting as principal contractor for the contract, works undertaken included the installation of haul roads, the design and construction of piled bridge reinforced concrete abutments, installation of the steel bridge with timber decking and construction of gravel approach paths and fencing.
Due to the site geology, we required piled reinforced concrete foundations for crane outrigger pads for the main bridge installation. Access into site was very restrictive, therefore the bridge span arrived on site in two halves and was spliced together in a controlled environment.
The bridge was successfully installed using a 250t crane under the control of a safety boat to marshal river traffic during the lift.
